To me, the most important thing about a musical instrument is the quality of the sound. I have played an old Kruspe French horn for many years, and I very much like the sound quality on the Kruspe. I had the opportunity to play a Willson French horn and I really liked the sound quality on this horn: it is very rich with a deep resonance and a soft sound. The sound suits my style very well and I also appreciate the speedy response on the horn with free blowing which is also a very important feature of a fine quality horn.

net Mod. 450.

Years of practice, study and playing eventually led Philip to become a member of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain at the age of 13. He attended a total of nine courses, sitting in the Principal Cornet seat for the first time at the age of 15. Philip had a great impact on those courses and became the first player ever to win the coveted Harry Mortimer Soloist Prize on three consecutive occasions. In Salvation Army circles, Philip also continued to progress. The Territorial Youth Band provided another opportunity for him to hone his skills, eventually serving as Principal Cornet on a number of those annual courses too. His outstanding ability eventually led him to membership of The International Staff Band's solo Cornet section and then to be the featured instrumental soloist in The Salvation Army's 2007 Gospel Arts Concert in London's Royal Albert Hall. While all this was happening, Philip had also commenced his studies at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he is a scholarship student studying trumpet with Paul Beniston (Principal Trumpet of the London Philharmonic Orchestra) and renowned trumpet soloist Alison Balsom.

The decision he made to enter the prestigious Maurice André International Trumpet Competition, which was held in Paris in November 2006, effectively launched Philip into the international world of music. Although he narrowly missed reaching the concerto final of the competition, his personality and playing clearly impressed the adjudication panel, which awarded him the Prize for the Most Promising Performer. Since the competition, Philip has featured as a soloist at the International Trumpet Guild Conference in Boston, USA, and is receiving more and more concert invitations from all over the world as his playing career takes off. In July 2008, Philip attended the London Symphony Orchestra Brass Academy Course and won the "Candide Award". This is effectively most outstanding player of the week award. Philip Cobb plays the new Celebration Cornet mod. 450.

James Fountain

James Fountain

James began to play the cornet from the age of three with both his parents being brass players also. It was through The Salvation Army which really gave James the opportunities to learn; providing his first instrument and a chance to play every Sunday in the young people's band at Kettering Corps. James performed his first ever solo, "Away in a manger" at an annual Christmas concert of The Salvation Army at the age of 4. James joined The Salvation Army's territorial youth band at the age of 11 on soprano gaining the chance to play with some of the 'Army's' finest young musical talent. At the age of 13 James moved on to the principal cornet chair of this band and held the seat for three years running. At fourteen, James moved onto a whole new level of brass band playing when he joined the world famous Virtuosi GUS band (multiple national and British open winning band) on the Repiano seat. In the same year, he joined the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain. In the summer of 2008 James became principal cornet of both the GUS band and the National Youth Band; through GUS James has played at the British open (Birmingham Symphony Hall) and the National Championships (Albert Hall) along with many other prestigious concerts and concert halls. James became in June 2011 principal cornet of the world famous Grimethorpe Colliery Brass Band. He has received solo awards such as the Katie Ogden soloist award twice, the Harry Mortimer junior solo award and the Harry Mortimer Solo award following in the footsteps of great players such as Phillip Cobb, David Childs and several others.
